Instead they are trying to convince you that new-age quack alternative thermometers be used! Why? Because they want to keep you sick! Well the secret is out America!

Doctors will deny that this is what is actually curing your illnesses, but before it being banned, insisted on using it EVERY time you visit their offices. Awesome atheists visit Alabama

We went to Tuscaloosa yesterday for a lecture from three AMAZING contributors to the Atheist/Skeptical movements. JT Eberhard, Jessica Ahlquist, and Duncan Henderson... and they did not disappoint. I have to admit though, the highlight of my night did not come from the lectures but from JT's impromptu performance of "Schadenfreude" by Avenue Q in the restaurant we ate at. I will try to post the videos from the lectures as soon as they're posted so that you can enjoy the awesomeness too! It was wonderful seeing some of my North Alabama Freethought Association friends and meeting some new friends from the other groups. Also, I want to say.... We didn't get our picture with Duncan because all of the speakers seemed very, very tired... and we had the pleasure of meeting him at a Tim Minchin concert... see.

For the record... this isn't simply people being enamored with a scandal. It goes beyond that here and the following can also be said for the likes of Herman Cain. People will stop making political issues out of your personal lives and affairs when you stop attempting to legislate the personal lives of others. Preaching traditional "family values" that aren't even practical for your own life while attempting to force it on others, is the epitome of hypocrisy. Keep your "family values" tripe out of bedrooms, and we'll cut you some slack. The only standard that should be set is as follows: Consenting adults. Anything more than that... and we're going to hold your feet to your own flames.

I will never be quiet.

I will not be silenced....Not by the religious who wish I'd crawl back under the door of the closet I was once confined to, who are more than willing to bring me things while I'm in there and who will gladly shut the door behind me so long as I refrain from denouncing their fairytales in public where anyone might hear.... Not by fellow nonbelievers who think I'm just a bit too noisy and a lot too harsh....And not by anyone who merely finds some odd solace in contrived togetherness.

Incessant grumbles shall not deter me from highlighting absurdities and injustices that cause others to quiet themselves so as to avoid persecution.

Silence yields more silence and change only happens when people smash their pots and pans in the streets while accommodationalists grow weary of sleeping with pillows over their heads. They whine to themselves and each other waiting for the uncomfortable noise to pass so that they might regain sleep. Their groggy brains sleepily, desperately claw for inactivity...peaceful, passive, blissful, uncombative ignorance...and they indignantly push the pillows harder into their ears. "Why are they causing such an uncomfortable scene? We deserve to post our religion throughout our institutions and discount the meals of those who show proof of weekly indoctrination and subordination to the church! Don't they know we're a Christian nation and we reward people for compliance? It's tradition!"

For every nonbeliever who is bullied into submissive silence, my volume will only increase. You can sleep when you relinquish your bigotry.

This comment was taken from the comments section of our recent post about Christian love. I think this sums up pretty nicely what Christians can do to keep atheists from posting sweeping generalizations about Christianity and Christians...

If there were more of you condemning these people who make vile statements like those... then it would be a lot harder to sift through and find the hateful comments. I think it's sad that it takes an atheist to point out that a lot of you are acting this way. A True Christian™ should have been posting these and telling these people that they're making a mockery of their religion. There are a LOT more Christians in America and I certainly shouldn't have had to look so hard to find True Christian™ examples of Christian love.

John doesn't understand why I'm not talking about the good things Christians do. I'll try to explain. I'm doing this here so that others who have similar questions can read this and try to understand.)

I recently read your blog in regards to the Christian hatred and contempt towards Jessica Ahlquist, and I must say that I am appalled. Not by your blog, but by the utter disgrace those people showed towards the young woman fighting for her rights as an American citizen. But I must say after reading your blog that I have found one thing wrong with your line of thinking, which is counter to the American Rights you wish to uphold. And before I continue, I am unsure as to what you were trying to say with your link to the No True Scotsman. Were you trying to say that we can't discount what a minority of our religion does, and they represent us as a whole? One bad apple ruins the rest of the barrel? Or were you trying to state that you do not believe all Christians would act the same way?

Neither. Typically when anyone mentions deplorable actions of Christians the instant and cliched response is, "Well they aren't TRUE Christians." This response falls into the No True Scotsman Fallacy. It's fallacious to dismiss them as "not really Christian" simply based on your opinion that they don't live up to your specific set of requirements. This doesn't mean that Christians are all the same. Nor does it mean they represent you as a whole. But you cannot say they ARE NOT real Christians. To do this is to create a circular argument that is unfalsifable.

If you believe that all Christians act in the same way, do all atheists? If an atheist was to walk into my neighborhood and kill my daughter, should I believe that all atheists would act in the same manner? No, I would assume that it was a man acting of his own accord. It is the same way that I do not view all Muslims as Western-hating terrorists that wish to kill us all.

No and no. Though Christians do in fact have a dogma whereas atheists do not, they do tend to interpret the bible differently from person to person as it is convenient to them. However, if an atheist committs murder, I would not then dismiss the action with, "Oh well, that person isn't a *true* atheist." That person, should they not believe in god(s), would indeed be an atheist and no amount of me disliking their actions would change that. See also: The No True Scotsman Fallacy. The actual argument arises in what causes one to committ murder. I would posit that one doesn't kill in the name of or due to atheism, but the same cannot be said for the religious.

If you believe that all Christians would not act the same way, then I apologize for the defensive nature.

However, in your blog you seem quick to criticize all Christians as constitution-hating, atheist-bashing monsters. "It is apparent that Christians only believe in tolerance so long as their religion is allowed to violate the constitution." In that sentence, the way it is written makes it seem you lump all Christians into one category. I can tell you now that not all Christians believe what Jessica Ahlquist did was wrong. I believe the separation of church and state is a great thought that our country was based on. Should atheists be forced to look at a prayer while at a public school? No. Should "Under God" be in the Pledge of Allegiance? No. Should students be allowed to pray while on school grounds? Yes. The key word in that last one is "allowed." Christians should be allowed to pray in public, and they are.

We agree, mostly. But I would note that yes I am quick to criticize Christians, but am certainly aware there are "moderate" Christians in existance. However, if the moderates aren't willingly and promptly speaking out against constitutional violations and "bashing" then they perpetuate it and are still no better than the other. Silently and passively accepting these things is not to be commended either.

Christians should be allowed to pray before a school sports game, but atheists say that it's unconstitutional. If a group of the athletes wish to pray before the game, it's their choice, not mandated by the school. Now if the school mandates it, then the mandate needs to be removed. But attempting to force Christians to stop personal displays of our religion in the open is also unconstitutional. The separation of church and state is just that. At any point where a state favors a religion is unconstitutional. The state is required to be fair to all, giving all the same rights.

The state is not to favor any religion, right. The prayer before a public school's sporting events is typically done over a tax-payer funded PA system, which is one reason why it is unconstitutional. Another would be that captive audience prayer has been ruled on by the Supreme Court on numerous occassions.

Now back onto the topic I was attempting to get at in the beginning. You characterize all Christians as hatemongers and back it up with photo's from social networking sites. Great. But what makes you better than those "Christians" who stated they want to harm a young woman who stood up for her constitutional rights?

Obviously because I'm not making threats. Obviously because exposing vitriol towards a 16-year-old who's enduring all of this simply because she stood fearlessly against the grain to promote the constitution, her rights and our rights, is important. If you can't see why then I'm afraid I'm wasting my time here.

All you did with that blog is incite hatred towards the Christian religion. Why?

I call bullshit. Evidence that all this blog did was incite more hatred please. Because from what I've seen it has further raised awareness that this is what happens every time atheists stand up for their rights.

Are all Christians evil hatemongers that think everyone has to follow their religion? No. I don't and I'm a non-denomination Christian. I may be non-denomination, but I'm still Christian. I do not believe everyone HAS to follow Christianity. Do I believe atheists will go to hell? Yes, but if you chose to not believe in the religion, that's your choice. I won't think anything less of you for it. Heck, I encourage you to use your brain.

And yet you choose to follow a religion which would subject those who use their brains to eternal fire and damnation.

As a Christian and a member of the United States Armed Forces, I fight for what this country stands for. I hold all of our rights dear to heart and believe no religious belief should hold any sway over any other. And yes, atheism is a religious view. It is a view that all religions are bogus and science has proven it.

Two things:
1. I applaud you for fighting for our rights.
2. Atheism is a religion like bald is a hair color.

So I challenge you, since you are a blogger with a following, to give both sides of the coin a showing. Your blog was about hatred and contempt from Christians towards a young woman. Try writing a blog about kindness that Christians do for others. Not just other Christians, but people of other religious views. You wrote the blog "Good without God." That was atheists helping atheists. Do a blog about Christians helping atheists, Muslims, agnostics, whatever. Give five examples. Show me that you yourself are not a hatemonger towards Christians and/or other religions, but a true believer in American Rights.

I am a believer in human rights. And it is within my rights to criticize something (i.e. religion) that I find insulting, dehumanizing, a threat to education and a danger to society as a whole. I do not feel an obligation to convince you of what I am or am not. The charitable things Christians do are not difficult to find seeing as how believers aren't exactly ignored or demonized for being Christian and are not hiding in closets for fear of said demonization. There is, however, a deficit in society's knowledge/undersanding of aheists. I'm raising awareness for them because religion has seen its fair share of the limelight. And though its ugliness is quick to be swept away and covered up, others and myself will continue to point out its horrendous failures so as not to let them go unnoticed.

Also, I must ask one question. Can you prove that all those people in the images you posted are Christians? If so, then that just sickens me.

Police investigate threats to Ahlquist!

I'm sure you'll all be relieved to know that the police are taking the threats toward Jessica very seriously and some students have already received disciplinary action.

Cranston school officials said they are working with police to help protect the teen. NBC 10 has learned that one Cranston public school student has been disciplined because of an online post.

"Police and school personnel are definitely cracking down on it. They see the effects of it and they will take legal action against it," said Amanda Hannon of Stop Bullying Now RI.

Can we go ahead and award the most influential atheist of 2012?

All the vitriol these Christians can spew could never be enough to diminish the heroic actions of 16-year-old Jessica Ahlquist. Her courage is contagious. She stood up against her school and her community to fight for our rights, won her lawsuit and the admiration of many. But she's also endured an enormous amount of hatred/bullying, and has done so with poise and bravery. I've seen a lot of this kind of bullying when issues of church/state are called out, but these comments are some of the most hateful I've come across.

It is apparent that Christians only believe in tolerance so long as their religion is allowed to violate the constitution.

Well, I've grown tired of just being tolerated and I will not be tolerating the stomach-churning hatred that's continuously espoused by those doing the "tolerating."

These are those comments... some of them anyway.. I hope you're reading them on an empty stomach.

Hopefully when they're aiming their violence and hatred at a 16 year old. This happens every time someone does something amazing to further our cause. Christians show their "love" all over facebook, twitter, and comments sections of news sites.

We always capture them... Practical Doubt always captures them... and they still get to use the same defense.

Good without god

It's only Tuesday and this week has already been insane.

One of our members, and now dear friend, of the local group I co-run with the husband has had some terrible luck (if you want to call it luck).

He was suddenly losing the roof he had grown fond of being over his head. Today was rainy and he trudged to a motel on the other side of town. He had lost his phone already and had only a day remaining with internet access, and it was a swift kick in the gut and an immediate knot in my throat when he told us he was taking his two beloved dogs to a shelter tomorrow so as to save them from his misfortune. The knot in my throat hung there tirelessly for the good part of a day and only dislodged enough to swallow once we were assured his furry companions were no longer in danger of losing him.

I've been sick over the helplessness of it all. But our amazing fellow heathens have offered their homes, their money and their time to help. He and his doggies now have a place to live thanks to the amazing people in the MCAA. It's a beautiful thing when humans are good to each other with no promise of gold palaces resting impossibly on fluffy clouds, nor virgins, nor immortality and without threats of fire and agony. Genuine altruism has soothed my knotted throat.

The Mayans were wrong, world ends in 29 days!

Here we are, embarking on our final year on this little blue planet. Though my calendar at work has already ran out except for the miniature January 2012 in the corner of the last page. Which leads me to believe it must mean everything in January will shrink and we'll be living in the opposite of a Mario big world. However, it's January 2nd and I don't feel smaller yet. But then maybe if everything has shrunk then we wouldn't notice would we? I suppose the Mayan calendar holds the authority on the end times and how arrogant of me to assume my work calendar is superior. Though... to my defense it does hold more factual information considering it is a Hubble calendar with lots of factual info on nebulas and stars and so forth. Essentially I'm arguing that NASA should issue a statement regarding "Ironkidd's Work Calendar End Times, plus miniature January" and since they haven't one can only assume we are shrunken and existence will cease at the end of our miniature month. It is especially convincing seeing as how my calendar does have photos courtesy of NASA. It is surely their obligation to debunk this! Make arrangements now! Do not assume we have an entire year as the Myans would have you believe! How dare they not take notice of my calendar that ends much sooner than expected. I will update with any new info regarding MiniJan seeing as how we're sure to run into some problems as the month progresses.

I know everyone is talking about how Ceelo Green fucked up the lyrics to "Imagine" last night.... but I haven't heard a single person mention how horrible he sounded!!! I mean seriously? He butchered the words that he got right!!!!!!!

Also... he acted like a total jackass on twitter. He deleted his tweets.... but not before those screencapping assholes at JesusFetusFajitaFishsticks could grab some evidence of his ignorance. ;)

Mr Ceelo... I don't think Mr. Lennon's vision of the dreamer depicted in this song.... was a violent, gaudy, asshole that threatens people for disagreeing.

Again... who thought it was a good idea to let you represent one of the greatest artists of all time, in one of the most pacifistic songs of all time? It is a peace anthem... and less than two hours after singing it in front of more people than John Lennon ever performed it in front of... you're threatening people. Disgusting.

Good thing he's just inviting evangelical Franklin Graham instead! Phew! I could hear the self-righteous rumble of Christians slamming their caps lock and readying themselves to pounce with diatribes about how they're persecuted!

I came across this interesting tidbit on billygraham.com today.

How is this OK? Dear Tuscaloosa activists, if nothing else get out and voice your objections!

I could be wrong, but I could have sworn a mayor acting in his official capacity shouldn't be inviting Billy Graham Jr to prayer services for the community. If I am wrong and this is completely legal and perhaps not government-funded... then the least that could and should be done is for the T-Town activists to get out and voice their objections. I do recall FFRF suing Texas governor Rick Perry for his participation in the prayer rally... seems as though they were shot down in court, but it didn't stop them from hoisting an enormous sign suggesting that they get off their knees and get back to work!

I should mention that these are what it devolved into after discussing how they'd like to fuck her and then realizing she's 15..

This is not a socially awkward invite to coffee. These are invitations of rape to a young girl, who I can only hope doesn't judge the entire movement by the idiots on reddit. Though I can't say I blame her if she does.

If you give two shits about the movement and the advancement of reason, the first thoughts when a kid posts a pic of the amazing book she got should be of how awesome this kid is for reading Carl Sagan and how the future looks brighter because of kids like her. And not how you'd rape her given the chance.

Nothing about her post warranted such a response. She was not being moronic, she was not posting pics of her tits and then asking you not to sexualize her. Her post should have generated nothing but positive replies from any serious activists. I can only assume that these idiot commenters were either A. Idiots. B. Inbred hillbillies reminiscent of the character in the book I almost finished but didn't because it was just too bleak ("Child of God" by Cormac McCarthy).

Being offensive towards something deserving of ridicule is one thing... directly threatening violence and rape to a minor is an entirely different story that deserves so much more than people blogging vehemently about it.

We stand with those whom we frequently disagree with, who pointed this out for what it is.... disgusting.

To the decent atheists that are reading this:
I am a woman that has attended several atheist conferences as an attendee and as a speaker on a panel... and I have never had an uncomfortable experience(other than a hangover) at one of these events. I strongly advise not letting a few idiots, masked by the anonymity of reddit, dissuade you from attending. I should also note that the gender ratio in the group I attend is pretty even... so don't assume it will be a sausage fest at any event just because some of the popular bloggers' groups are.

Rick Perry changes his abortion stance

So apparently Rick Perry has changed his views on abortion!

Referring to a woman he spoke with, who was conceived in a rape, Perry said:

“Looking in her eyes, I couldn’t come up with an answer to defend the exceptions for rape and incest."

Is anyone surprised that Perry couldn't come up with an answer?
Of course not! 1. The only answers to be found in someone's eyes are those relating to optics. 2. Perry can't come up with answers regarding his own talking points much less the answers to one of the most highly debated topics in human history.

As a matter of fact let's just throw all women who don't want to bear the offspring of their rapists in jail and rape them again!!! That'll teach them to think they deserve humane treatment! /facepalm

Today Pope Benedict gave the traditional Christmas address in Vatican City, dressed garishly and holding a gold and ruby encrusted staff. Among calls for peace in the Middle East he managed to request with a straight face that Christians look past the "superficial glitter" of modern-day commercialization of Christmas and instead look to the spiritual meaning. A laughable suggestion coming from a man strung with extravagant robes and jewels. Stand-ins for a tardy Jesus are escorted around the eye of a needle. A conveniently divine detour.

An abhorrent excuse for a human has asked the "city and the world" to be more thoughtful. I would more readily take the advice and mentorship of Charles Manson, as Manson's cult inflicts/has inflicted less damage on the "city and the world" in terms of numbers. It's also worth mentioning that the vast majority at least see Manson's sinister cult as such. The wolf in sheep's gold-threaded clothing is seemingly far more benign to those who see his "holiness" only as a religious figure. The same people who are outraged by Jerry Sandusky, who should be equally outraged by Mr. Vatican City, but aren't. Perhaps they aren't because they're ignorant. Perhaps they aren't because it's much easier to paint broad excuses for papal who abuse their positions than football coordinators doing the same. Just as Penn State students rioted over the firing of Joe Paterno, those with a vested interest in the Pope would surely do the same on a global scale should he have actually been brought to justice. And he should be. Penn State fans riot as the remaining college football fans swallowed back the vomit creeping up their throats. Believers readily offer tidy packages of excuses while the rest of us choke back stomach acid.

Everyone who has ever built up an overflowing and difficult to contain distaste for Christopher Hitchens are only since his death releasing their vitriol, now that they're surely safe from his verbal retaliation.

The words in which we would need to describe our gratitude for all that Hitchens has done, are words that only Hitch himself would be able to string together eloquently and adequately enough. We're left with a profound sense of loss and an equally profound gratitude that we were able to share a stint of time on this planet with such a giant. His courage was and continues to be contagious.

In honor of and in memory of, we should all strive to put up a bigger fight in the face of injustice as we now have an enormous slack to pick up that will take all of us to lift.

Words to know:
Elevatorgate - The shitstorm that ensued after Rebecca Watson was propositioned by a man in an elevator.

Fem-Corp - (I've created this term in order to distinguish this particular group of feminists from all feminists.) The band of women who regurgitate similar blog posts regarding what they see as "sexism in the atheist movement" and who often overlook facts completely (see: SERAM in Huntsville, Alabama when a few of these women tried to paint Sean Faircloth as sexist and when I stopped taking them seriously).

Summary of Elevatorgate:
I'm assuming you're all familiar with the current goings on regarding Rebecca Watson being demeaned in an elevator and surely almost raped and forced to make pie afterwards when a lowly being possessing a penis said the following to her: "Don't take this the wrong way, but I find you very interesting and I would like to talk more. Would you like to come to my hotel room for coffee?" Oh yes. He did.

Actually, I find that Rebcecca replied to this in an almost acceptable way... originally. However, the first cycle of blog posts by the rest of Fem-Corp (see: Greta Christina, Jen McCreight, and others) have since written post after post attempting to speak for all women in the atheist movement. I'm sure they'll say emphatically that they don't attempt to do this, however that doesn't change how it's read or what's implied.

Richard Dawkins replied with a rather snarky bit. Rebecca Watson then proposed that we should now boycott him for it. His initial reaction was indeed snarky and sounded frustrated... however, a few comments later he simply asks for someone to politely explain to him what he's obviously not getting.

Another cycle of blog posts came around attacking Dawkins. Then there was one by McCreight saying that her original post regarding Dawkins' response to Elevatorgate wasn't intended to make Dawkins out to be a misogynist. She had a few points I'll address in the following bits to come.

My thoughts:
I can certainly relate to Rebecca, in that being approached alone in an elevator would make me uneasy. Granted.

I can certainly see why she would then bring it up and say, "Hey don't do that." Also, granted.

I cannot see how this incident is considered sexism or why her response was shrouded in the implication that Elevator Guy is a sexist.

I cannot see how Dawkins' comments warrant a "boycott" - a man who has done tremendous work against the most misogynistic set of ideas, theistic ones.

Finally, I'm infuriated that Fem-Corp seems to feel that they are qualified to speak for all females. I'm infuriated that they speak as though they have found the sole cause as to why there aren't as many women involved in the atheist movement.

Also, I understand that sexism is a human problem. But I do not agree that we should now call this "sexism in the atheist movement."

Addressing a few quotes from Greta Christina's recent blog:

"You want to know how to not have huge Internet blowups every time women in the atheist movement complain about sexism? LISTEN TO WHAT THE WOMEN ARE SAYING."

Exactly which women "the women" are eludes me. Perhaps only women who agree with you? It would seem to me that you aren't even listening to what women are saying. Quite a few disagree with the things you have to say on these issues and you're conveniently dismissing those women. Merely because you and I have similar genitalia does not by any means constitute you and I having similar opinions on this. There are so many women out there who do not have a significant outlet to voice their opposition to the women like yourself, Jen McCreight, Rebecca Watson and others. Lets stop talking about Richard Dawkins for a moment and let me just point out your privilege that you are obviously unaware of as well. You have an outlet and a vagina and therefore feel you're entitled to being able to speak for the rest of us, or so it seems. I have this little blog and though it's not much, I will try my best to give the other women who you do not represent - women in opposition to Fem-Corp - a tiny voice.

Go ahead, call me "uneducated" and stick your fingers in your ears. "Lalala there's that uneducated southern woman thinking she is entitled to voice her uneducated opinions regarding feminism on the Internet."

Point being... in order to actually avoid huge Internet blowups every time women in the atheist movement complain about sexism.... quit attempting to speak for all women and quit portraying this as "sexism in the atheist movement."

1. You do not speak for me. You do not speak for everyone with a vagina. We do not all feel that Dawkins was out of line. We do not all feel that flirtation is demeaning. We do not all feel that the man in the elevator was a sexist. We do not all feel that men should just "shut up and listen"... I'll spare you from a point by point list of everything we actually do not agree on. It's enough that you just know there is a massive chunk of us out here who also need to be heard on this. If we're supposed to be listening to the women in this movement then we should listen to all of them and not just the ones with a major outlet. I'd go further and say that the majority do not share your opinions on this issue. You only seem to hear from them in comment sections because they're afraid to speak out publicly due to the impending shitstorm that would inevitably follow from disagreeing with you all. I, however, am fond of storms... shit or not. It's important that we be heard as well.

2. Sexism is a HUMAN problem.
I'll quote from another blog I wrote on a very similar topic...

This sort of stuff is not exclusive to the atheist movement nor is it exclusive to just women and I don't think we can point this out enough. ... To pin this down as any particular group's problem is a waste of effort. This type of behavior is universal across all groups of humans. It's the same with theists, social clubs, and like I've said before Xbox Live even. There is no indication that it is any worse in the atheist movement than in any other movement. I would argue that in fact it's less for many reasons: 1. There is no atheist dogma that insists women are less human or less important than men as there IS with religion. 2. Though we do vary in many ways, regarding a wide array of topics, we have more in common morally speaking than your typical social group (such as, book clubs and the like) and the vast majority of us are capable of understanding where a line should be drawn, whereas with other social groups the variety of ideas are often far more diverse. 3. We're not shrouded by invisibility as people are on the Internet/Xbox Live/etc.

Attack the sexism where you see it, fine, but call it what it is... "sexism." My argument is NOT that "because there's so little sexism in the atheist movement it therefore doesn't matter." I repeat, that is NOT my argument. I simply feel that it'd be best if we were to attack sexism wherever it exists and not inadvertently turn people off to the atheist movement. People outside the movement, who surely do not follow every word you write, will undoubtedly see this as something worse than it actually is. Contrary to popular belief, some women are scared off by YOU despite your having a vagina.

I'm not asking any of you to shut up. But I do honestly think you all need to take a long look at yourselves as being at least one reason that there aren't as many women in this movement as we would hope for.

"We are trying to help you get laid."

This you repeat several times... as if men can't possibly continue reading unless there's a reward of sex in the end. Why isn't this sexist? To assume that all men want is sex and could never just want coffee and conversation... Why aren't people up in arms over this?

Greta goes on to say...

"When you are so vehemently unwilling to see some of the ways that privilege works in your favor, I have to assume that maintaining privilege is the point."

I think the word "privilege" immediately puts people on the defensive. As if you're saying, "You're just so fucking privileged you can't see what us living the tough life are fighting for." I realize that this privilege exists, but perhaps you should approach it differently if you sincerely want to educate people to these things and not just start a shitstorm. Words and connotations are important... especially when attempting to educate. And I'm not being tone police, but to assume tone is never important is obviously ignorant.

Addressing a few quotes from Jen McCreight's recent blog:
A bit that she posted that bugged me... (although in a blog that I'm more fond of than others she has written, where she admits it is not time to boycott Dawkins and that she still respects him)...

"No one likes being told they're wrong in general - but people get especially uncomfortable having their privilege pointed out. I sympathize - it took me a long time to understand white privilege and not feel like it was somehow attacking me or calling me racist."

You're right! And you should always remember being right about this. IF what you're trying to do is educate people. Maybe you should re-evaluate how you approach these kerfuffles regarding sexism. The same way that it took you a long time to not feel like you were being attacked and called a racist... is the same way people who are unfamiliar with feminist issues (i.e. the uneducated, that you're trying to educate) are instantly put on the defensive when you and others mentioned here write angry diatribes on such. I write angry diatribes too, but I'm not claiming that it's my attempt to "educate" people. I'm an angry writer and mostly use this place to vent and should my venting be entertaining perhaps gain a few followers in the process. I'm not trying to teach anyone anything like you all claim to be. Your methods of education should be looked at a bit closer. Then, maybe next time something like this happens more people will be more inclined to listen and learn something from you instead of fight against you.

Addressing an often stated quote from PZ Myers:
PZ often says that men should, "shut up and listen."
How is this ok? I don't need or want a man to tell other men to shut up before I can be heard. I don't need or want some father figure to stand up for his little girls. To say that all men should shut up and listen is insulting.

Addressing mansplaining:
This term makes me sick. Can we all just be adults and stop using this word please? My god, if you want to be taken seriously stop using cutesy terms that are used to immediately dismiss retorts that you don't want to deal with. Address it! Address it with your own retort. Tell them they're wrong. Back up your claims whatever they may be. The only way I've seen this term used is to disqualify men from speaking on women's issues simply because they're men and they just won't understand. This is certainly NO way to educate anyone. Let them speak their side and then show them how they're wrong and if you can't do that then perhaps you should re-evaluate your side. It's not hard. Maybe it is on the Internet... but in that case I'd just advise to not feed the trolls.

In conclusion:
Women... stand up for yourselves. You don't need PZ to tell everyone to shut up. If people aren't taking you seriously, re-evaluate your approach. If women you disagree with are attempting to speak for you stand up to them too regardless of the ensuing shitstorm. Be heard.

Men... don't proposition women you don't know in secluded areas. Period. Fuck, you might get maced! It's dangerous for you too! I'm not going to call you a sexist for doing something stupid... I'd just call you stupid... so don't be stupid. And if someone tells you you're mansplaining tell them to womansplain it to you then so your sex-crazed little man-brain can comprehend.

My thoughts on "Sexism in the atheist movement"

Tonight our local atheist group went to a party.

I'd just like to take a minute to point out that it isn't always females who are bombarded by flirtation, because I don't think this is brought up enough. I'd also like to point out that this flirtation is not in and of itself a "problem." Our group tonight is the perfect example.

One of the men in our group was absolutely swarmed by the women at this party. All night he had a flock of them around him. Afterwards, posts from women in the group included some of the following regarding the night.

"Agreed! Like I said, I had an effing blast. Although, the pool was VERY cold. Def worth watching all the boys' dicks shrivle up tho."

"And yeah dude, the girls were DEF digging you. Cant say I didn't notice you from my car >.>"

"I mean, if he IS the Sex Symbol, he has to have nudes. I'm just saying."

"Shit, I couldn't look at him for more than 10 seconds without having to look away or start screaming random sexual profanities."

This type of behavior shouldn't even be a problem UNLESS a person feels harassed or in danger or actually discriminated against. Mere flirtation is not the same as discrimination, nor is it the same as sexism. Speaking on someone's appearance may be superficial to some but in no way does that equate to "sexism." It's called sexuality and biology and I suggest you all learn to embrace it.

True sexism is an ugly thing and I think it would be more effectively dealt with on a case by case and a person by person basis.

However, even if you are thoroughly convinced that this IS sexism then I just ask that it be called that. Call it "sexism" and not "sexism in the atheist movement" because it's not an atheist problem, it's a human problem and there is far less of it in the atheist movement and to continue to refer to it as an atheist problem is a huge disservice for what is probably the most tolerant and accepting of all groups.

I get really excited when Towel Day rolls around as it is the closest I get to a religious holiday. No, I don’t mean a holiday where I go and kill people because my god’s dick is bigger than their god’s dick(or my god’s vagina is softer, for all you feminazi’s out there)… I mean a holiday for a purpose that I really really support. Although, I think we should start calling it “Tell a Friend About Douglas Adams Day” judging from all the baffled people I’ve already encountered today. If you don't know what Towel Day is.... Don't Panic! We've got you covered.

Towel Day, for those of you who live in a very VERY secluded cave(without twitter) or you individuals that are in a very inchoate stage of your learning…. Is the day we celebrate the life of Douglas Adams which you can read about HERE.

We carry our towels with us as advised in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy here..

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Hello everyone. We survived the storms here in Alabama and are now suffering the aftermath. No, not the week and a half without power, not the relentless efforts to pick up the damage, nor the searching tirelessly for essential items…. But the sheer idiocy of the local religiotards who see a silver lining in the total destruction of entire counties. The lies and rumors they spread to justify their faith. The praying for things they think are important. The things they consider “blessings” and the absolutely inconsiderate way they refuse to admit that some were not so blessed. It’s sickening.

Five people from my town were killed in the same house. One child survived from this house and instead of seeing how horrible this is… they consider it a miracle. Never mind the fact that the kid was found stuck under both her dead grandparents and parents… still clinching to her. Never mind the fact that this child’s life is about to be harder than anything any of us can imagine without going through it ourselves. Never mind the fact that the child herself suffered very extensive injuries…. This is a miracle… and if you can’t see the hand of god here… there’s no hope for your evil soul.

If that’s the hand of god…. Tell him I have space issues and to stay the fuck away from me.

A child was supposedly found in a cooler after the tornado and when asked how he got into the cooler he told them, “The man with wings put me there.” This story has many different variations and hasn’t been reported on any news channel. It is said to have taken place in several different cities. I’m fairly certain any rapid responders that found a child safe in a cooler would feel pretty inclined to share their story with the rest of the world. Why the secrecy? Maybe because it’s complete bullshit? So… if this story is true… why did god feel the need to save this particular kid and not the many others that died? He’s a prick maybe? Or he doesn’t exist and the story is bullshit? Maybe?

Yes, actually you do. I volunteered. My wife volunteered. Nearly every member of the two atheists groups I’m in volunteered. We just don’t feel the need to bring our beliefs into everything we do. We don’t have to mention that we are not with a church in the way you mention that you are. Every time someone brags about which church they’re with while volunteering… I just want to tell them that I enjoy eating at Arby’s, because that’s about as relevant. Them volunteering is the HUMAN coming out of them… the desire to help others… not the faith… nor the religion. It’s them simply doing what humans do… we all do it and don’t need the threat of hellfire and damnation or even the promise of rewards in heaven to coerce us into doing it. We have been really busy lately as we have started a new atheist group for our county that has consumed a large amount of time and also, I’ve completely changed shifts at my job…. The one I get paid for… so I’m still adjusting.
I’m blogging now because I had an epiphany of sorts…. Would you like to hear it?
Too bad…. Here goes:

FUCK YOU. That’s it. I’ve decided that “fuck you” is a more appropriate response to everything, always. I think in the past I’ve tried to please too many people and perhaps it’s a waste of my precious time. Fuck Christians as usual… Fuck atheists/agnostics that sympathize with religion…. Fuck libertarians… fuck 9/11 truthers…. Fuck charlatans… fuck you if you tell me not to say fuck you… fuck republicans… fuck you if you don’t like something that I do.
My sense of humor is over the top… and disgusting…. and offensive. If you don’t share it then perhaps you shoulllllddddd, fuck off? I’m not trying to appeal to a niche… and I’m not trying to please anyone but myself with this blog or my facebook posts. I’m not trying to drum up hits, if I were then I would probably start an inspirational blog with a stupid fucking bible verse every day.

If you think something I post is wrong or disagree strongly with a message I send… then by all means post a comment and we can have it out there…. But for those that want to spew the hackneyed bullshit about “being nice” and “don’t be a dick” ……………… then you can die in a fire because it isn’t my style.

“But arguing about it on facebook isn’t gonna help anything.” Hmmm…. It will certainly do more than having the debate take place inside your head. It will certainly help more than having the same discussion face to face in a coffee shop… because you can go back and look at the points and then refute or agree and you are also exposing other people to it.

“OH but what if those other people don’t want to hear it?” I gives zero fucks what those other people want to hear…. Those are usually the people that need to hear it.

So apparently the House Judiciary Committee approved a bill encouraging the placement of "In God We Trust" on all "public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions."

Alright look... if you're an atheist/agnostic/freethinker/secular humanist/whatever you want to call yourself and you're opposed to bricks like this being ripped from the wall of separation of church and state and you HAVE money to spare.. please throw it HERE, HERE and/or contact National Legal Director for American Atheists, Edwin Kagin HERE... if you disapprove of shit like this and you want to take big issues to court then we have to have the finances to do so... otherwise that wall with all the fucking holes in it... will undoubtedly crumble.

Financing a legal team isn't tithing. We have a goal that is worthy of throwing money at... not some intangible fairy that requires money to continue loving you which, when seen as it truly is, translates to needing a bigger steeple or a newer Lexus for our "leaders." We don't have a book read to us like squishy-headed children by men in robes who have their own biased agendas that they want to cram into barely formed skulls.

We have societal issues that can and SHOULD BE addressed ... issues that you can research on your own that don't need to be spoon fed to you... issues that WOULD BE addressed more aggressively if we as a movement would get our heads out of the goddamn church and quit talking about how we don't want to come off as churchy and thus talking our way into the shadows by being so goddamn afraid of "seeming" churchy that we're stunted as a movement.

If you're not worried about being a church and you find yourself saying "Atheism isn't a religion" and you sincerely mean that shit then quit halting progress by letting theists manipulate you into inaction and missing the entire fucking point. Ohhh but these Christians said Atheism is a religion... we'd better not do this that and the other. You don't let their other nonsensical beliefs sway your actions... don't let them use this rhetoric to talk you out of the fight. It's bullshit, now call them on it. Fucking donate if you're capable of donating.

So apparently some females are out of their minds enraged over the panel I (the lone vag) was honored to be a part of... enraged by our use of the word "female." And don't let them fool you... this was the only problem the woman in question brought to anyones attention (via the microphone anyways).

The panel was discussing topics the audience had voted for in the days leading up to it... at this particular moment we were discussing whether or not women felt that men bombard them with their attempts at "hitting on" them... whether or not it runs them off because there's obviously not nearly as many females as men in this movement. Of course there isn't a complete lack of females, there aren't as many as we'd like to see, but then let me direct you here for my thoughts on that. Summary: The movement shouldn't change, the women should.

This woman stood up and made a self-righteous quip about how we shouldn't have been using the word "female" because we're not animals. #1, Yes we are. #2, Quit wasting everyone's time. If THIS is the most important thing you could think of to mention regarding sexism in the atheist movement then I'd say we're doing pretty damn good as a movement. You get the mic and THIS is what you choose to bring to everyone's attention? I was hoping to get some input from the single females on how they felt when they first joined a group... did they feel harassed? Was it over the top, or just typical flirtation you encounter anywhere else that went away once you showed no interest? Is it any different from walking in to any room full of dicks (ohhh shit... come on guys... one of you stand up to lil' ole me and tell me how you don't like being called "dicks" I'm sure you're all fuming...).

Tell me why. SOMEONE, seriously tell me why the word "female" is offensive. Tell me why it's any different from the word "women" ... my initial reaction to her bringing this up was... what are we supposed to call us? She apparently prefers the word "women." It's less sexist obviously because.... there are no tall letters towering arrogantly over other letters...? Look at that "f" and that "l" obviously suppressing the rest of the puny letters that make up the very word!!!!! Sickening isn't it!? Terribly important isn't it!? *stomps around angrily*

There were two responses from the panel... one was from me after I recovered from shock... I merely said, "Aren't these words interchangeable?" The other was from, my new friend, Heath who said, "Would you rather us call you the weaker sex?" If this runs you off then you're taking yourself far too seriously.

If equality is what you want then you're going to have to stop begging for special treatment. Any man that made an equally embarrassing melodramatic to-do like this woman did would have caught equal shit for doing so. If you can't take that and want special treatment when you spew stupid shit from the hole in your face then I'm sorry you'll never know equality. Essentially what you're saying is that "I'm a girl and you should go out of your way to be nice to me." <--- That's demeaning. Fuck that. I don't care what genitals you possess, if you don't think before you speak and say something stupid, you deserve any and all of whatever criticism follows. Speaking up and speaking your mind is GREAT, but then going on to retreat and whine when someone calls you on your bullshit is a fucking disservice to the rest of us FEMALES who aren't so easily fucking offended. If you're going to be outspoken and have your opinion heard, be prepared to stand your fucking ground or else shut the fuck up because you're an embarrassment to my gender.

(OH AND BTW: If you were listening at all you could see that if there were ANY real feminists in the entire crowded event it was SEAN FAIRCLOTH! Some atheists feel that grouping up is a productive, positive action. Others... seem almost outraged by the very idea of it.

Originally, I thought... "Local atheist group... sounds churchy... what do they do sit around and pat each other on the back for agreeing with each other?" We thought about this for a while and then decided we'd like to meet other like-minded individuals and this would be a quick and easy way to do so. We went to a coffee social and then to a Hitchen's debate with the local group. Come to find out... it's not church and there are far more disagreements than agreements. It was immensely refreshing to interact with intelligent people and have intelligent discussions and also a lot of hilariously ridiculous discussions. It was great... these people didn't get offended at the random dead baby joke!

Maybe we enjoyed it because we didn't get intelligent discussion elsewhere because we live in a small town in the deep south and if you dare say something negative about conservative Christian "values" you're just UN'MERICAN and offensive! Maybe others get intellectual stimulation from the friends they already have and thus feel no need to get with an official group. For us though... it's been immensely helpful and overall rewarding. We've met some incredible people along with occasional dipshits. We don't pass a plate around, we don't sing atheist anthems (that's not to assume there even is such a thing)... fuck, some of the people in this particular group consider themselves DEIST! We just hang out, talk, drink, smoke and so on... it's just like any other group of friends only there's an official name, logo and website to help people connect/network... why does this turn people off?

As far as a national group goes, such as American Atheists, I find this hugely important. We're a small fraction of society (at least here in the U.S.) and if we want to keep god out of government we're going to HAVE to work together. Period. Can you personally afford to tackle SOCAS violations? Or would it be nice to have a group with leadership doing this for you? We have ZERO representation in government. How else is this suppose to work, if not for an organization? Do you have an alternative, because if so I'd like to hear it.

Now if you're apathetic to SOCAS and you don't think your rights can/will/are being shit on and there's no need to speak up and speak out and fight for the laws that SHOULD BE enforced... then I will have a different blog for you at a later date...

Why do you guys think atheists are so far outnumbered by theists? Why do you think atheists have almost zero government representation?

Because we refuse to organize.

Period.

A Fishstick review of SERAM

SERAM (South East Regional Atheist Meet) was this weekend and it was... amazing! 200 of us gathered in Huntsville, ALABAMA <----- that's not a mistake... ALABAMA! Methinks that means growth. I cannot even begin to express the excitement Dave Silverman brings, I am beyond grateful for someone who really has their shit together. The second we're allowed to post the speech he gave we will... and you should drop what you're doing and watch it full screen with surround sound because it's that inspiring. So if it doesn't end up with millions of hits I'm bound to flud feedz with it! Don't doubt me motherfuckers, you will haz a FLUDDDDD! Bahahaha. I don't give a fuck what you think the rainbow promises... you're wrong... and you will haz flud.

Moving on... Let us begin with the shitty parts and save the best for last.

A few shit moments of the weekend:

1. The hotel food - It was a misleading whore! Most of the time it looked lovely and when you're calorie deprived, dehydrated, and hung the fuck over and anxious to replinish... it's a kick in the stomach to eat a plate full of shit under the guise of a nice meal. But we did it anyways... again and again... overpriced shit because it was just too damn convenient.

2. Waking up after approximately two hours of sleep feeling certain that if a hangover could kill you, it would be this one and you would likely die before getting to the elevator much less down it.

3. Having the GPS cunt lead you in circles with no luck finding the liquor store you told her to fucking find. I felt like she was surely fucking with me. "Turn left, turn left, hey here's a fun idea... lets turn left again... we'll just drive in circles enough to make you feel drunk is that acceptable?"

I think that MAYBE I’m recovered enough from the SERAM to give you a fairly accurate review: The first and IMHO the most important thing that I want to throw out there is that Dave Silverman is not fucking around. I think he made this very clear and has done a lot to prove it. Billboards with balls. Speakers that don’t hold anything back…. And a regional convention that easily topped the NATIONAL convention that I attended two years ago. Dave is doing what needed to be done as soon as “The God Delusion” was published… catering to a younger crowd. I understand the senior members of the group are important and blah blah blah… but not appealing to the younger crowd has really held them back…IMHO of course. Lolz. These fresh faces are starving for attention…We are connected. We are organized. We google. We are buying the books. We are watching the movies. We are writing the books and making the movies. We are legion……..wait….. I was going somewhere else with this. The young crowd has a lot to offer.

The speakers weren’t all household names but their approachability quickly made up for this. The ones that weren’t in my hotel room partying with us Friday and Saturday…. Were buying us drinks at the bar or mingling in the lobby…. And who the fuck am I? Fucking NOBODY! Paul Provenza spilled alcohol on my bed! Sat at my laptop and entertained a bunch of drunk atheists with his weird taste in youtube videos.

Dr. Darrel Ray was hilarious as always…and always at the bar mingling with everyone. He really listens when you talk… and that makes average Joe feel pretty good about himself. He told me that he watches our posts on facebook and called us “rabble rousers”… which meant a LOT to me.

I could go on and on about how amazing the guests were but the important part is that I think everyone felt like there is a distinct plan now. The student tickets for the national convention in Des Moines are only $20!!! Dave Silverman told me that he wants 500 students there! Let’s make that happen. If they are finally willing to show us some attention… let’s make them glad they did. Donate. Attend. Network. Spread the word. If you see a news article with American Atheists in it… comment and share with your friends. Atheists have very little representation in politics and it is time for that to change.

I know I’m all over the place but putting structure to the events that occurred this weekend is really above my pay grade

Friday night while we were getting shitfaced in my hotel room with Paul Provenza… One of our Huntsville friends Justin Ledlow decided to take a piss… this may have been his greatest piss ever. Paul asked him through the door if he would open up for him when he did his Sunday stand up. Justin had been talking about how there isn’t any stand up comedy venues in Huntsville. Justin did a great job on Sunday… and showed balls the size of the billboard that announced this event.

Last but not least…. My personal friend… Blair Scott. That’s all that I really HAVE to say. Anyone that attended has no doubts about how hard Blair is working for the cause.

I can’t count the times Blair went to make an announcement and was out of breath. Not a fat joke….or a smoking joke… or a… you get the fucking point, Blair was busy and we should all thank him. We need to convince him to quit smoking though… because when that fucker croaks… the conventions will be a clusterfuck.

We should also recognize Blair’s wife(whatever her name is) for being so supportive of him and making sure his fetishes(sitting on plungers) remain a secret with all these Blair Scott fanboys running around trying to pry them from her.

There was also a group of evangelicals holding down the sidewalk adjacent from the hotel. They came all the way from Mississippi just to tell a convention of atheists that god loves us. Yep, this is going to get me a lot of fans... I'm sure.

It has continuously been brought to my attention that men far out number women in the atheist community. There are countless ideas concerning the cause of this - including the idea that women are put off by the potential confrontation that comes with being vocal about their atheism. This to me seems like the chains of a belittling, religious, sexist upbringing persistently lingering and keeping one hand firmly bolted to the floor. The following are my thoughts (er.. rant) on a potential solution...

I don't want to change the movement in order to appeal to women that are paralyzed by fear. I want to insist the women change!

No I don't want to alienate them further... obviously... but I want those women to speak up and speak out and feel confident doing so. We SHOULD NOT alter the movement and our outspokenness in order to appeal to more women... and I say this not because I merely prefer the movement as it is (although I do). I say this because I think changing it would be a HUGE disservice to these women. Coddling the present behavior encourages it... essentially it says, "It's ok to be scared to speak among men.. you SHOULD BE! So here we'll throw you a bone and tone it down so you can maybe maybe maybe withstand being a part of our community... we guess."

What we need to be figuring out is how to help these women not be so fearful of speaking up and being vocal. Fuck what your family taught you. Fuck what your church taught you. Fuck what the TV taught and continues to teach you. Someone needs to help these women overcome their fears and we also need to raise a new generation of strong, confident little girls that will undoubtedly grow up to be strong, confident, productive women!

I'm seriously sick of hearing about how there aren't enough women in this movement and how it's surely because women are put off by the outspoken and the people that aren't afraid to voice their ideas and voice them loudly if need be. It's senseless to tell confident individuals to be more sheepish so as to be more inclusive of those others that are involuntarily sheepish. We've got to get beyond this. Debilitating fear is not acceptable. I'm not saying that these issues are anyone's specific responsibility, but maybe someone should consider tackling it... I'm saying maybe we should find the root of the problem instead of trying to contort around it.

Shutting up is the last thing we (atheists), as a minority, need to do. Loud, vocal, controversial, confident people are positively necessary on so many levels... it would be detrimental to the movement to silence the fearless and coddle the fearful.

Words have meanings. I'm afraid it's true. And you can't just impose new definitions or ignore the ones already in place in futile attempts at making valid points. Here... let me help you with, "Obama is Not a Muslim."

I agree with the sentiment. I'd like to think he's an atheist. However, you've made a few mental errors along the way.

Take for instance where you can't understand why one statement, "liberals are godless traitors," is debatable and the other, "conservatives don't believe in civil rights," isn't. Your statement is debatable because obviously not all liberals are atheists (though I wish you were right!)... I'm fairly certain you're aware of this and to say otherwise would be disingenuous at best. The other half of your statement is an opinion, darling. First you would need to explain who exactly has been betrayed and then you would need to show your work (you know... provide a little evidence... preferably convincing evidence). On to the next statement and why it is less debatable. Lets define civil rights because you seem to have an unshakable desire to use the term "civil rights" lightly and only when it's convenient. Here's one definition, "Civil and political rights are a class of rights and freedoms that protect individuals from unwarranted action by government and private organizations and individuals and ensure one's ability to participate in the civil and political life of the state without discrimination or repression." Now... what are conservatives, by definition, against that is evidence for conservatives being against civil rights... here are a few for starters: conservatives do not want gays to marry, adopt, have the same legal standings, conservatives do not want women to have the right to choose what goes on inside their uterus. Those are enough to show that conservatives are, like I said by definition, anti civil rights. See there. Simply saying words in a sequence that makes you and your readers feel good, does not make any of it so.

Here's yet another statement where you seem to forget that words mean things, "How about the Satanists claiming to be Christians who stand outside soldiers' funerals with signs that say "God Hates Fags"?" Now yes yes we can all agree that the Westboro Baptists are despicable. However, you've mistakenly referred to them as Satanists. You cannot just call a group of people you do not like Satanists. They do actually follow the Bible quite literally. So, technically they are better Christians than even you! Satanists worship Satan. WBC worships the same sky fairy that you do, unfortunate isn't it?

Once again you say, "All liberals are atheists." Sadly this is not true! I wish you were correct, but you're not and you're incredibly childish for even bothering to make such a fallacious statement. Perhaps the majority are atheists? I doubt it, but MAYBE! One can only hope!

CBS estimated 87,000 with an error margin of 9,000. This was done by aerial photography. By professionals. It should be noted that the owner of the company that did the photos has received hundreds of harassing phone calls since his estimation was published.
This type of estimation is fairly accurate.. FAIRLY. I don’t see it being as off as Beck and the other rednecks claim. The method used uses several photos of the area laid out overlapping and placed under a grid to check the density.
The photos beck showed on his program when he claimed that there were at least 500,000 didn’t give you the ability to look from directly above the crowd… like the one I showed... so the people looked packed in like sardines. The aerial photos that were taken, allow you to zoom and show that there were gaping holes that were hid behind the huge jumbo trons.
See for yourself… If you will scan around here you will see the HUGE gaping holes in the crowd.

The number of people that once fought against gay equality that are now themselves coming out of the closet is increasingly common. Is it really any surprise these people stayed in the dark for so long? Not only will they undoubtedly catch tremendous criticism from their current similarly homophobic colleagues but they also catch nearly as much criticism from members of the gay community for not coming out sooner. As hypocritical and gutless as this is am I the only one that thinks we should give these people a fuckin' break? I mean sure it's completely fucked up, but you can't tell me you've never been debilitated by fear. Maybe you can for now, but eventually...

Take this hypothetical situation...

John has been raised his entire life to be anti-homosexuality. John is told from childhood that homosexuality is an abomination to god (not to mention all the indoctrination that comes with tricking your children into believing in such a god)... it's one of the most horrendous and disgusting crimes against humanity. John becomes older and finds that HE is such an abomination. John searches for cures and answers. John forces himself to behave as expected. John gets married to a woman he can tolerate... John has kids... because that's what John is supposed to do and perhaps maybe hopefully the part of him he's so desperately trying to hide will eventually subside and he will be rid of the "evil" that resides within him. John doesn't want to be evil. John wants to be good for humanity and good for the god his parents spoke of. John has no intentions to harm anyone. John wants nothing more than to feel like he's "suppose" to... he doesn't want to be "sick" or "possessed" or "corrupt" or "evil" or or or... he wants normalcy and will do anything to find it. John persists. He goes on to find a place in politics to fight against the very thing he struggles with... surely he feels some hostility towards those openly homosexual living lives outside of his dark and lonely little space. Of course he does... why wouldn't he? He surely thinks, "Why aren't THEY fighting for a cure and trying to purge this evil..." "Of course homosexuals shouldn't be accepted... it's a choice isn't it?" John chooses to push these feelings aside and go on trying to stomach his heterosexual world... why shouldn't they? Why are they content with being evil? Eventually, John will crack and not be able to put up with it anymore. Maybe John found someone to talk to. Maybe that someone helped him to see that who he is is nothing to be ashamed of. Wouldn't this obviously take some getting used to? Wouldn't this obviously be terrifying? Maybe he's not a hero because he didn't come out at the height of his political career and fight on the right side of the issue. But maybe John didn't want to be anybody's hero. Not everyone fits that bill. Some of us struggle with the mundane interactions of every day life. We should be fucking outraged at a society that allows this and not so much at John whose story in its entirety we cannot know.

It's fucked up. John is gutless... maybe so... but even so... he certainly has no more control over that than he does over his sexual orientation and we shouldn't continue to shit on someone who obviously was incapable of handling anything more. I'm glad John is still breathing... I'm glad John was able to come to terms with who he is... there are surely many more that aren't and don't.

Is it any wonder people are still hiding? Is it any wonder that people are fighting against the very thing they themselves are struggling with? Is it really? It's heartbreaking. Really.

I understand the anger towards people like John. However, I think we should take a look at the knee jerk reaction to the Johns in our world. People will continue to hide, but lets not make them feel like they have to hide from us.

BREAKING NEWS: Christopher Hitchens diagnosed with esophageal cancer

After a few days of wondering why Hitchens was cancelling so many of his upcoming events The Huffington Post, The New York Times, and others report that he has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

Hitch says,

I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice.

Telling you that we at JFFF are terribly saddened by this unfortunate news would be an understatement. Here's hoping the treatment goes well... losing Hitchens would be a tragic loss to the secular community.

The billboard will be fixed and so will our resolve.
